Island Girls

Movement Matters

It’s February and I’m ready for the gray snow to melt and spring to arrive. So when I saw this photo I couldn’t help a wistful moment dreaming of islands and sunshine. But the real star of this photo is the woman in the foreground. The one balancing a large water container that must weigh a ton on the top of her head. She looks so happy and, dare I say, elegant as she strolls along the beach. Her grace is her birthright.

This young woman has most likely been walking with heavy objects on her head since she was a little girl. The result is a style of walking that supports an erect spine, free limbs and tremendous strength.

While most of us westerners spend more time slumped over desks and staring down screens than strolling with heavy objects on our heads, we have the ability to learn to move with grace and ease. And – we don’t need to carry water to do it.

Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons are designed to help you get in touch with your inner elegance. As Dr. Feldenkrais often noted, his method can help to make the impossible – possible, the possible – easy, and the easy – elegant.

What are you waiting for?
